People waiting in the yard almost faint from the Ramadan fast and the scorching heat – yet they insist: “We’re not going to pass up an opportunity to see our relative.”

I spent almost two hours in court where Judge Lieut. Col. Sebastian Osovsky presided.

Four cases ended with plea agreements: the fines amounted to 19.000 shekels, 5,000 in two cases, 6,000 and 3,000.

In addition, a detainee released on bail had to post 10,000 shekels.

Muhammad Shehadeh from Al-Aroub Refugee Camp is a nursing student from Al-Quds University in Abu-Dis.

He is charged with participating in a protest and throwing rocks.

His father told me: “You know, the army is stationed at the entrance to the camp and there are always protests there.” He told me that another son is in jail for two years on similar charges.

Atty. Ilya Theodori reported that a plea bargain is in the making and so the next hearing was set for 15.7.18.

Walid Nasser – confessed (as part of a plea bargain) that for three years, starting in January 2015, he published 10 seditious articles praising terrorists. Note: ten publications in 1095 days!

He also asked someone how to make an explosive charge, but nothing came out of this communication.

Atty. Ahlam Haddad represented Nasser and she reached an agreement with the prosecution.

The penalty:

200 days in jail, 4 months suspended sentence for 5 years for the charge of sedition, 10 months suspended sentence for 5 years for the charge of bomb making and throwing objects, plus a 5000 shekel fine.

Muhammad Khatib from Hizme was represented by Atty. Ilya Theodiri. Muhammad is charged with throwing rocks in 2016 and 2017. He has been in detention since 30.9.18.

His father told me that he has another son is in prison.

This is Muhammad’s first detention.

Many residents of Hizme have been detained.

The plea agreement resulted in the following penalty:

16 months in jail, 18 months suspended sentence for 5 years and of course a fine of 6000 shekels.

The father reported that the fine could be reduced but then the prison time will be longer. “I have nowhere to get the money, but I want him at home.”
