Afternoon

Anata - Shu'afat

We went first to Anata and parked amid the strewn garbage, broken bottles, discarded cans, strewn paper, and other varieties of filth.  The traffic through the checkpoint proceeded smoothly in both directions.  Hundreds of school children made their way via the pedestrian walks to the other side.  Few school children appeared to be returning to Jerusalem .

Al- Ezariya was bustling.  A good deal of traffic.

Wadi Nar.

There is construction at Wadi Nar opposite the kiosk.  We were told that a traffic circle is being installed, and we noticed last week that new water pipes are being laid.  There were land movers in the area and about 10 workmen.  In addition, the field (where people used to park their mules and donkeys) seems to be getting readied for construction.

The checkpoint itself was very quiet. All vehicles went through without delay in both directions.  Given the stable situation at Wadi Nar, we question whether it is really necessary to have a machsom watch team there.  We remember all too well in the past the many difficulties that we confronted there and the “literally” roadblocks put before the Palestinians, but this has not been the case for the past years.  Perhaps a different venue would be of greater benefit to all involved..
