"To say about a policewoman in the defense force that she is lying?  How low can you get!!!”

Military Court of Appeals

Judge: Lieut.- Colonel Ronen Atzmon

Prosecutor: Atty Lymor Goldstein

Respondent: Hanan Jamal Abed-Alrahim Shalabi,  ID 860173798

Hanan Shalabi is a student from Tul Karem.

She was arrested at the large demonstration which took place in Bil’in marking 10 years of protest against the separation barrier.

At the remand extension hearing which took place a week before, it was decided to release her on bail for the sum of 6000 shekels. Today’s appeal was requested both by the prosecution and by the defense concerning this decision.

In today’s hearing, attorney Goldstein claimed that there was a case of mistaken identity. A video was shown, showing an additional girl, and a long discussion ensued, concerning items of dress, various witnesses telling different stories about the way the detention had been conducted, as well as about the time that had elapsed between the detention and the identification of a number of additional suspects who had been in the area.

The quote which opens this report was taken from the words of the prosecutor,  captain Gilad Perez. The possibility, mentioned by attorney Goldstein, that the policewoman had lied in her testimony, horrified him.

The following day, Monday 9.3.15, a hearing took place with judge Lieut.-Colonel Azriel Levy.  The hearing was set in advance in order to veryfy the question of bail (a procedure which takes place regularly whenever bail has been set and is not to be paid until a date which has been specified.

At the hearing it was revealed that the prosecution's appeal was accepted.

Thus the date of the arraignment hearing was set for 1.4.15.
