Morning

Rahel (Rita) Margolit, a veteran member of machsomwatch died about a month ago.  She was an active member of her synagogue and very friendly with her self-defined “right of center rabbi”.  In memory of Rahel, the rabbi asked to be taken to some of the checkpoints that Rahel monitored in order to better understand her strong feelings about what was going on in the country.

I took the rabbi and Rahel’s daughter first to Anata and then to Qalandiya.  Assisted by a map by Ir Amim,  I pointed out some of the areas contained within the Jerusalem municipal boundaries but on the other side of the wall.  We arrived at about 7:00 a.m. when the children were boarding buses to take them to school.

From Anata, we went to Qalandiya, went through the turnstiles to the other side and viewed the situation there.  Actually, it was very quiet and the wait to get back through was amazingly short.  However, they did have the opportunity to walk through the maze of cages and witness what thousands must go through every day

I don’t know if my guest will be at any peace rallies any time soon, but I think that the visit, a tribute to his affection for Rahel Margolit, might make him think twice about the ramifications of the occupation.  And I do hope that he will share these second thoughts with his congregants.
